When a 76-year-old Hampton, Virginia man heard the sounds of a break-in, he called 911. Officers arrived and took a report, and a cursory search turned up a broken window but no burglar. Police then left the building to search the surrounding area, while the homeowner, an Army veteran, grabbed his own handgun and continued to search the premises.

A Chino Hills, California homeowner heard that his daughter’s ex-boyfriend had forced entry into their home and was believed to be hiding in the garage early one Wednesday morning. Arming himself with a handgun, the homeowner headed toward the garage to investigate the intrusion, only to be ambushed inside his own home by the invader. In the ensuing scuffle, the intruder stabbed the homeowner multiple times before the homeowner successfully ended his attack with pistol fire.
